An accurate representation. In ways that I don't think the author expected. It is informational and somewhat entertaining. It also conveys the boredom of deployment in that the events are rather tedious to read. I enjoyed the book, but it was difficult to get through.

Fragments from Iraq written in a diary form by Zsolt T. Stockinger is a very interesting read, interspersed with the doctor’s own photographs gives you camera’s view of war. If you wondered what’s its like on the battlefield and the aftermath of same and wanted an accurate view of the suffering of combatants and innocents from a reliable source, this book is for you.
Mr. Stockinger a Navy trauma surgeon, served from February 2005 to March 2006 in Iraq’s Sunni Triangle. His diary offers an honest look into daily military life from the point of a top trauma surgeon, telling of the daily activities the surgeon encountered on his base in Iraq: from the boring daily routine, to the serious injuries, whether from roadside bombs, rockets or firefights, self-inflicted wounds and so much more.

Zsolt Stockinger is a Trauma surgeon stationed in Iraq from Febr 2005 to March 2006. In a diary he records the daily life at the base. It is not for the faint of heart, being a trauma surgeon he is quite detailed in his descriptions of the different casualties that arrived at the trauma center. It is a testament to the carnage and suffering of war. But there is also humor and relaxation, in between the casualties, where the author and his buddies go jogging or "sightseeing", trying to make the best of their time there.… (más)

This is a fantastic and at times disturbing look at a side of war rarely talked about.

The author does a superb job of relating the stress and day to day routine (if it can be called that) of a trauma surgeon in one of the most dangerous places on earth.

At times the narrative slows it's pace much like the experience of soldiers in a combat zone, days of boredom followed by seconds of shear terror, yet it is always compelling.
