Star Wars has never been my thing. I like the multipolarity of the Star Trek universe (if I must make a choice, I mean; not because I'm so obsessed with Star Trek), rather than this deal where there's this central action movie narrative and then people try to build stuff around it and pretend that it's as rich. Many polities, many series, many valences--Trek can do action, but also soap opera, sci-fi, and even quiet drama; Wars is just all about Rebels and Empire, a binary structure with a shitty knockoff Zen and goofy swords for spiritual life. The Ferengi v. Jar Jar Binks. Locutus v. Darth Maul. Star Trek is sometimes nerdy and sometimes a bit libdem fascism-lite, but it's never dopey cowboy shit.

Anyway, what this means is I am not sympathetic to the idea that the Star Wars mythos deserves this extended treatment. And while you might have convinced me with lengthy-but-deft articles that provide information for the casual comer while capturing the trivia for the core, you will never convince me with an article on Jar Jar that barely mentions his 'notable failure' status in the real world; or an article on Wedge Antilles that is 173 pages long (82,000 words), all plot summary of every fucking Star Wars comic and nove and fanfic he was ever in, and doesn't mention the 'Vicks and Wedge' characters in Final Fantasy VI; or an article on the Death Star that notes "following their destruction, other planet-devastating superweapons followed, including the Galaxy Gun, the Sun Crusher, and the World Devastators." This is a dead, creativityless mythos that repeats its few tricks ad absurdum; its fans seem to have no desire even to reach out to broader geekdom and just want to bury themselves in Star Wars and hide from the real world till easeful death (hopefully in their sleep, dreaming about Princess Leia's hidden places); it is antilife and it makes me angry and depresses me, because I want them to have more. 82,000 words.
