Smith, T. (1999). Crafty masks. Milwaukee: Gareth Stevens Publishing.
Grades 4 through 6
As the title says, Crafty Masks is a how-to book that teaches children how to make 24 masks using a variety of techniques. After an introduction that briefly explains the cultural purpose of masks, Smith provides a list of materials and equipment, carefully explaining how and why they will be used. Materials and equipment are easy to find and generally cheap—kitchen utensils, arts and crafts supplies, and even leaves can be used to make great masks. The technique for papier-mâché is explained in detail, and pictures help clarify each step. Each mask is presented in a double-page spread with a brief introduction that explains the cultural influences behind the mask, a list of all materials and equipment, an image of the finished mask, and step-by-step instructions illustrated by pictures. Instructions are very detailed, and the pictures depict the most important steps in the process.

Crafty masks is a great book to be used at home or in the classroom. Thomasita Smith is an artist whose work has been featured in many exhibitions; here, she uses her skills to create fun, easy-to-make masks inspired by traditional masks—Venetian Carnival masks; African animal masks; Japanese and Greek theater masks; Egyptian mummy masks. At home, these masks can allow from bonding time with parents, or they can be used as an afternoon activity with friends. In the classroom, they can be used as a hands-on component that enlivens a Social Sciences class. The book does a great job in incorporating a great variety of masks that are inspired by cultures and tradition around the world, giving children an opportunity to widen their horizons and learn about other people and their customs. The language is easy to understand, and steps for each mask are logically organized and easy to follow. The illustrations are helpful and highlight the most important steps for each project. This book will be a welcome addition to any collection for children.
