This old book has some lovely nostalgic things in it. I rode with the Blue Ridge Hunt as a guest back in the mid-nineties. It was during cubbing season and I vividly remember Carter Hall early in the morning with the sun coming up and the mists rising out of the valleys; so beautiful.

I think most people don't really "get" foxhunting; they seem to think it is only for the British or rich, snobby people. Quite honestly, the fox hunters were some of the most straight-forward, unpretentious horse people I have ever met. During my life I have been involved in 4-H, competitive dressage, racing and showing; and fox hunting was the most fun of all my equestrienne activities. It is for people who love horses, hounds, nature and physical activity. There are no trophies in the hunt field. You don't need a stylish new wardrobe every year or two, you don't need to constantly replace your saddle with something newer and trendier and no one asks you who your horses daddy is.....and why is that? Because to fox hunters things like trendiness really don't matter. What really matters is that your horse carried you across country safe and sound and both horse and rider had a good day out.

I plan to retire to the Virginia hunt country in another 20 or 30 years and hunt until I'm 90.
