Pleasantly surprised by this. I wasn't sold on the 'Send your PCs to WAR!' idea as I haven't seen it done well, but this was really thoughtful. I still think mechanics for some areas, like larger battles, are a bit weak or light, but overall it provides a ton of ideas and considerations.

The strongest section is the last one, in which it introduces other changing breeds and describes in general how to make new ones. I would have loved for this to be a greater portion of the book - the breeds presented are quite unique and flavorful without falling into the stereotype trap WtA so often does.

Really the book should have been two - one that was in-depth mechanics and story hooks for war, one for other changing breeds.

In a reversal from the Old WoD, the game about dealing with death is quite playable, if somewhat limited in scope. Finding a group willing to deal with the subject matter might be difficult, but the characters and system are well-integrated with the rest of the core NWoD books.

This is called "a Storytelling Game of Second Chances".

I never thought I'd be impressed with a game where you play vampires until I saw this. And, while admittedly the prospect of playing blood-sucking fiends still hasn't completely won me over, I definitely like this book.

For one thing much of the art has that sketchy, black and white, thick lined quality that I so enjoy.

Also, the modern setting game "Vampire: the Masquerade" portrays vampires as slick and decadant or punkish and countercultural, which somehow doesn't appeal to me. By contrast the "Dark Ages" places these monsters more interestingly in a world that is already harsh and brutal, and in which their beastial appetites seem less out of place.
