Singer decided to write his memories of flying as a bomb-aimer in a Lancaster during WW II so his grandchildren would know what he did in the war. What he has given them and us is a very readable look at the training and war experiences of a typical young male Canadian during that period.

Singer eventually became a highlyregarded bomb-aimer and took part in two of the three missions to destroy the Tirpitz battleship in a Norway fiord. He also led attacks on viaducts in Germany where pin point accuracy was necessary for a direct hit. His No. 9 Squadron flew many specialized missions using the biggest bombs available. His squadron flew many of those missions in company with N. 617, the Dam Buster squadron which attests to the quality of crews in No. 9.

He describes hair raising episodes but also some very funny ones. Especially memorable was the long flight to Archangel, Russia from which the first Tirpitz raid was launched. It included crash landings, drinking contests with Russian soldiers and life in the primitive Russian north. This is a wonderful memoir.
