When WW I started in August 1914, Canada on the advice of Great Britain started to arrest men who emigrated to Canada from the Austria-Hungarian Empire, Germany and Turkey. The irony of doing this is the Canadian Government had invited these men with their families to come to Canada to homestead land in the west.

These internees were forced to work for little pay and food in isolated areas such as the Rockies building roads into National Parks. Some of them remained in custody months after the war ended.

The book also describes the Canadian Government's 2013 apology for the treatment of the internees and the creation by Parks Canada of interpretative centres at the sites of some of the camps.
