I've read all of Chuck Schwab's books. This one is my favorite for the way it conveys a lifetime of wisdom about business and investing. It's also the most personal, with plenty open dialogue about the smart moves and lessons learned. Schwab has had an amazing journey since May Day. This book gives the reader a chance to experience that history in just over 300 pages that are as straightforward and concise as is the leader that guided his team every step of the way.

Usually I find it much easier to learn information through reading, but a broker from Schwab covered everything in this much more clearly in one meeting. I suspect that that is due to doubt about my abilities to learn the material more than the clarity of the book, but the gentleman I spoke to was really great.

Very basic, a good primer but not exhaustive or deep.

I found this easy to understand and read, which is saying something since my financial understanding was almost zero when I picked it up. It made me a big fan of Charles Schwab. Am I financially independent now? No. But I have a much better understanding of what it takes to get there. The financial system is much less of a mystery. If you have money just sitting around, then this book will show you how to use it to advantage (without engaging in unreasonable risk). If you're not making enough money to save some for investment, then this book isn't going to help you--you've got a different problem. This is the one book I would save if I decided to pare down my shelves of investment related books.

Chuck Schwab always seems so genuine in his attempts to help Americans save for their future -- not for the sake of a portfolio but for what it makes possibles for families and individuals. This is a nice overview and a guide for the beginner or novice. In particular, in emphasizes the basics of a fundamental approach, watching for tax effects, handling the emotions of the ups and downs of the market, and using common sense. Our future would be better if everyone would read this, take it to heart, and follow the advice.

Simple, useful, practical. I would recommend this to anyone who needs an overview about investing at that stage in life.

Information about investing by the industry's pioneer in self-empowerment for individual investors. Includes explanation of life-cycle investing and some more advanced techniques. Some of the market logistics has changed since this pre-web book was written.

Does your family talk about money? Do your kids understand your money values? Do you and your mate agree on how you spend and invest your money?

Do you know if your parents are financially secure? These are the questions that Carrie Schwab-Pomerantz and her father, Charles Schwab, ask at the beginning of this invaluable family financial primer. The authors acknowledge that these are difficult questions but stress that families must grapple with them and come up with answers.
