- Ph.D. from Yale in 1964. Taught a short stint at Yale before moving to University of North Carolina. In 1985, he was involved in a bicycle accident that put him in a coma. He came out of the coma, but short term memory was impaired and so ended his teaching career. (Information from Wayne Meeks's introduction to the Westminster John Knox edition of Paul and the Anatomy of Apostolic Authority).
