Full-disclosure: received this as a review copy, haven't read the whole thing.

Don't get thrown off by the cover, this is a serious book with great financial advice. The thing that stuck with me was the question: what are you going to do when you retire? I love that the author talks about long-term planning in concrete ways. It's not something I ever really thought seriously about until I read this book. Actually, it's not just good financial advice, it's good marriage advice too to have a collective goal to work towards as a couple.

Recommend to those newly married! In fact I'm going to buy my brother a copy as a wedding gift!

This book is organized around a workbook style format, which makes it rather easy to flip through section-by-section. The examples are general in the text, but there is also some web-based worksheets that accompany the text as well as a proper companion work-book. In some cases, these workbooks for other such "how-to" works are take it or leave it. But with this item, the workbook seems required since there is deliberate reference in the sections that won't be seen until those relevant workbook sections are used.

One of the most important facets of this book, and I think the most positive, is the metaphysic that prefaces the book's content - that of determining and working for a mission-statement that centralizes and structures each respective married couple's finance conversations and planning. There are not strict rules, and this book assumes no major wealth held by each couple. Only to say that each couple CAN make good and positive use their available cash flows to make a positive impact on the globe. For this is the major idea handled by the authors, Robbye and Scott Schroeder - the goal of a proper marriage is not to retire or to own bigger and bigger garages for their increasingly expensive cars, but rather to find a helpful way to "give money" to causes or direct actions. In this, instead of being a cold book about collecting and hoarding cash by the greedy, the authors are asking their readers to take steps of faith and use their monies for something else. And that I applaud. A book with a premise such as this will not conform to every married couple's plans, but it does to mine and will to many others. Enjoy it.
