This delightful picture book doesn't take long to read, has interesting pictures, and can instill courage. I had a free copy via Bookfunnel and this is my voluntary review.
I enjoyed this audiobook narrated by the author.
It is a bit of a love story, with quite a bit of humor, songs, religion, and the little guy fighting back against the big corporate oil company.
Remmy learns from his grandfather how to prank the corporations, telling them a lie to get free cigarettes. From there, Remmy begins pranking his neighbors and finally pulls a huge prank on the company. This doesn't go so well! However, Remmy keeps his good nature and never lets up on pranks. It eventually works out for him, and his love, Beth.
Humorous story and you definitely root for Remmy, while following his life from the 1940s to the 2010s.
I especially enjoyed hearing the songs sung by the author, it gave the book a real voice!… (más)

Funny, poignant, and moving, Bell Hammers is one of the best books I've read in a long time. This book was so easy to fall in love with and reminded me of Mark Twain in a way that made me want to reread his books. Needless to say, I am glad that this story was written.

"Bell Hammers" traces the life of "Remmy", Wilson Remus Broganer from his childhood to end of life, through a series of anecdotes, tall tales, and dubious recollections. Remmy is a wonderful character, set on creating a happy life for himself and the other less fortunate folk. The story is set in a region in Illinois known as Little Egypt, and describes a land of hard working farmers and oil company entrepreneurs.The style of writing is reminiscent of Mark Twain, in that the author liberally uses colloquial expression and clipped sentences."Bell Hammers" is engaging, entertaining, and darn good distraction from all of the horrific COVID-19 news and statistics. Worth a look.
