I loved the style, but felt it was too short. Fortunately, it will be getting expanded into a series. Which means I won't feel that way for long.

With the appearance of a mysterious being in ancient Egypt with knowledge and powers that strongly affected the empire, two groups arose in response, the Order of the Four Sons of Horus who sought to control the power and the Keepers of the Starry Wisdom who sought to obtain and use this power for its own benefit. These two secret societies continued their struggle throughout the history of mankind into the modern era, which leads us to a phone call received at an old riverside warehouse in Kansas City, one of the secret headquarters of the Order. The phone call is from an Order member who disappeared twenty years ago in the Missouri town of Excelsior Springs, and his desperate call is a warning that a powerful Isfet breach is in process. With the immediate unfolding emergency, the Order director is forced to quickly gather a less than perfect team, field tech quarterback Bill Welsh and his partner Cecil, senior archivist Doug Grigori, former police detective and supernatural cynic Ryan Murphy, novice apprentice mage Kate West, and team leader Colonel JD Garnett. Now, the team has to rush to Excelsior Springs, try to uncover the location of the breach and the mystery behind it, seek the location of a section of the staff of King Solomon which should have the power to stop the breach, and fight off monsters from dimensional gateways. There is a lot of well-written creativity in this supernatural sci-fi adventure that mashes up mythology, religion, historical figures, and secret agent action. However, the complexity may be overwhelming for some, especially when the tale shifts back into time to bring up back story perspective of revealed characters and events. There is no partial resolution at the end of book one, only a cliffhanger that will leave the reader a decision on whether to move on to the next book in the series.… (más)

A fun, action-filled read. I love stories that interview history with paranormal and the unexpected. A re-reading of historical events and possible other-worldly explanations of why the world is the way it is.

A ragtag crew of adventurers come together to track down a mystical object, and along the way encounter ghosts, zombies, and other nasties. The authors are good at crisp dialogue, energetic action sequences, and the building drive toward a cliffhanger of an ending that makes you want to read the next in the series.
