Tadao Sato

A nicely readable account of Mizoguchi Kenji's career as Sato, thankfully, doesn't stray into the hyperbole and pretensions which dog many serious film related studies.

Sato is excellent at putting Mizoguchi's films into their context, although at times it feels as if he is skimping on the details regarding Mizoguchi's film making process. Certain films - even if Sato indicates them to be among Mizoguchi's finest - get scant attention.

Overall then: it's wonderful that this is a readable account of Mizoguchi's cinema, but it's a shame that it isn't more detailed at times.… (más)
