This book was interesting. If you go to the Santa Monica Farmer's Market, this shows what to do with some of that unusual (and apparently delectable) produce that they sell there.
Unfortunately, I don't live in California and don't have access to a lot of these different varieties of fruits and vegetables. The way the author describes them, they must be mouth-wateringly yummy. I'm now bummed I can't taste a real Blenheim apricot. I don't like apricots but I'm realizing my dislike of some fruits and vegetables is that I'm relegated to the crappy stuff in the mass market grocery stores.
At least we I got some Palisade peaches and heirloom tomatoes this year!
Examples of the recipes (which I did not try) are Chanterelle Popcorn, Dried Persimmons with Sheep's Milk Cheese and Walnuts, Green Garlic and New Potato Soup, Golden Puree of Rutabagas with their Greens, Grilled Fig and Market Ham Salad, and Fresh Black-eyed Peas with Tomatoes and Onions.
A lot of these recipes I wouldn't be able to make because I just can't get these ingredients or if they are in the store, they are expensive. Some of these I could have made but knowing I wouldn't be making it with just the right variety to make the dish delectable, I didn't try. I enjoyed reading about the different varieties of veggies and fruits that farmers grow and I am glad they are out there keeping real food alive.… (más)
