This is a magisterial work on the functions and forms of the actual and extra-judicial system as it operated in Southern-Central France in the final days of the Old Regime. Writen my the director of my PhD dissertation, it is by definition a work for which superlatives are inadequate.

A fairly substantial book, considering it is from a lecture series at the University of Texas at Arlington. Some of the essays, like William H. McNeill's and Stanley Palmer's, are ground-breaking and thought provoking forays into what transatlantic history is and can be.
