Biografía breve
Elizabeth Whitaker was born in Yorkshire and went into domestic service at an early age. By 1760, she rose to become the housekeeper for Lady Warburton at Arley Hall, a great estate in Cheshire, near Manchester. Elizabeth married John Raffald, the head gardener at Arley Hall, and moved with him to Manchester, where his family owned several market gardens. The couple had 16 children. Elizabeth opened a shop selling hot dishes, cakes, and table decorations. She also established a registry for reliable servants for the gentry. She wrote The Experienced English Housekeeper (1769), dedicated to Lady Warburton, which became a major success. It went into numerous reprintings over the next century and was admired by everyone, including the young Queen Victoria, who copied portions into her private diary.

According to Hawkes, Lancashire printed books: a bibliography ... down to the year 1800 (1925), no. 453: 'At the foot of the t.p. is the announcement "The Book to be signed by the Author's own handwriting." and the signature appears [in the Wigan public library copy] at the commencement of the text below the caption in this style :- Eliz. Chap. I. Raffald.' Wikipedia suggests she signed the front page of each copy of the first edition in an attempt to avoid piracy of her work.

Fifteen authorised and twenty-three pirated editions of The experienced English house-keeper were published and it remained in print for nearly fifty years: the last edition appeared in 1810. It was a popular cookery book, including in colonial America, copies having been taken over by travellers, and versions printed there. She was also plagiarised heavily throughout the 18th and 19th century, including by Mary Smith (1772), John Townshend (1773), Richard Briggs (1788), Mary Cole (1789) and Mrs Beeton (1861).
