Concerned about the backlash to the Vancouver Native community when teenager Shannon Perrault is found murdered in a manner staged to hint at a Native ritual, Jesse Dancer conducts his own investigation. Through his exploration, we learn details of Shannon's last days, and Jesse's efforts ultimately help Detective Hanson solve the murder.
The story is better edited than many e-books, but still needed some work. For example, Martine LaChance is mentioned as Jesse's coworker early in the story, but is referred to as Martine Perrault several pages later. Friendship Center is also intermittently Friendship Centre.
I enjoyed Pittman's style and would happily read her other short stories and novels. Her mention of insider hints such as where to find parking near the congested University of British Columbia area made the story feel more real.
This was a well-paced short story until we are faced with the murderer. The revelation and resolution seemed abrupt.
Although it was hinted at throughout the piece, I also had a hard time believing a main character's declaration in the final paragraph--it seemed rushed and totally inappropriate for the emotional response that should have resulted from her position at that moment and the minutes that led up to it.

Kelly and his dog are employed as security for a permanent fleamarket. When a stallholder is killed he must find out what is happening.

This is one of those books which is filled with "colourful" characters. This especially applies to Anna, the deceased, who has secrets hidden in her past. All the people seem to be inadequate in some way and I really didn't take to any of them. Everyone has lied or hidden something at least once and Kelly has to find out who is telling the truth and what really happened. Despite being an ex-police officer he doesn't seem to be very good at it as I had worked out who the villain was ages before he became suspicious.

I didn't care about the victim as I didn't engage with her at all. I didn't really take to Kelly at all as he was a bit of an enigma. I didn't like the other characters as they seemed to be a bunch of losers who lied about everything.

Overall - not really a good story.
