Allan Pinkerton (1819-1884) was the world's first private detective. Emigrating to Chicago from Glasgow, Scotland, he discovered a gang of counterfeiters and assisted in their capture. He became deputy sheriff of Kane County, then Cook County, resigning from the police to form the Pinkerton mostrar más Detective Agency in 1852. Another more-than-a-century-old book I've read this month, and this time, it is a true story. Written by supposedly the first detective/spy of America, this one is the story of a bank robbery and the catching of the burglars. It is neatly written, with detailed description of the places and the detective work. I had fun reading it.

This book would be funny if it were not so tragic. This is the story of the Molly Maguires as related by those who persecuted (prosecuted) them. The Pinkerton Agency made its name from its involvement in this case. The Pinkertons infiltrated the Irish community and manipulated the evidence, engaged in entrapment and perverted the course of justice in the subsequent trials. Writing their own story, they are proud of their accomplishments and view their participation as serving the cause of justice.… (más)
