Blue Jean Baby: One Girl's Trip Through The 1960s… por Sally Parmer
This is not a groupie book. It isn't full of sexual exploits. It's a book about being a teen in the 60's, in the Southern California music scene. She meets many famous musicians and the music is a big part of the book, but there is so much more to her story. This book gave me a taste of what it would have been like to be a teen in the 60's in Southern California. I've always loved the clothes and music from that time and this book intrigued me from the first page to the last.
The 1960's in California wasn't just about Haight-Asbury, tokin' and dancin'. It was about a group of girls in LA County who became overnight groupies when they went to Las Vegas to see the Beatles. It was about Laurel Canyon and its denizens, about weed, sex and strict parents. It was about becoming pregnant and being responsible for the consequences when you are too far along for an abortion.
Sally Parmer lived all this and more and her book, Blue Jean Baby, tells us how she survived 1963-1973. Sleeping with such notables stars as Herman of Hermit-fame, Donovan Leitch (she wasn't sure it was him until he played "Catch the Wind" for her); taking her friends for abortions in Mexico when she wasn't old enough to drive; and living her teen-age years with a neurotic mother and hard-working father who was afraid to cross her.
This autobiography was sad in many ways, brought back so many memories and made me glad I grew up in a small town in Colorado rather than the LA scene which I doubt I would have survived. Sally Parmer was a strong girl who grew into a stronger woman - and we are the richer for this book.… (más)
