My heart strings are pulling for Katherine "Katy" because of slavery demands. Kathy lost her mother, sold into slavery, but how she's more than a slave is because she knows there is a higher power watching her and taking care of her. The desire of freedom was sown in the heart of her grandmother, Sowei, from Africa that was on the slave trade boat to come across to America. Her desire of freedom and hope nourished into her mother, Hannah, now the third generation--Katherine. She had the willpower to take the next step, or steps necessary to fulfill this burning desire.

Margaret Pagan writes a rich, heart-felt story about freedom desired by a family to no longer be enslaved. However, for me, I bypassed the years per chapter, and preferred to know the age and years that passed throughout the novel. I love historical fiction from a biblical standpoint or story, and on culture, roots, and slavery. This enriches ones soul to know about their roots and history, no matter how tragic or horrific it may be. As I read the pages, I have hope and pray that everything will be okay.

Moreover, I enjoyed reading during slavery time that Kathy persevered, gained her freedom, took in orphan children to teach them the Word of God (Sunday School), and held her own business as a baker (woman entrepreneur) regardless of the hardships, hard decisions, and turmoil. Trials to Triumphs. Great read for Black History Month!
