Beautifully written memoir of a Gaelic poet's upbringing - in the 1960s - in a remote and traditional village in the northwest corner of Ireland (County Donegal). O'Searcaigh writes about the gradual awakening of his poetic voice, and also his tentative explorations of homosexuality, first in rural Ireland and later in the metropole of London.

This collection isn't bad, but I really was not overly impressed with Frank Sewell's translations. If you have read this and weren't blown away, I would like to recommend that you pick up a copy of Ó Searcaigh's 1993 collection, "Homecoming: Selected Poems" / "An Bealach 'na Bhaile: Rogha Dánta". That volume features translations by many different authors, and is a more diverse and, (I believe), enjoyable read. Similarly, if you are thinking of reading this and do not read Irish, I would recommend the aforementioned collection instead.… (más)
