I learned the following rules of structured programming from this book: (1) that each module has exactly one entry point and one exit point; (2) that each module was written to be read in top to bottom order with no jumping around; (3) that calling modules should be coded before their corresponding called modules; and (4) that a functioning program becomes available in testable stages.
Best of all, this is the book that introduced me to HIPO (Hierarchical, Input, Process, Output). This concept worked better for me than flowcharts because HIPO diagrams show the data flow through a program as well as the logic flow.
This style of programming became so ingrained in my psyche that I never moved on to Object-Oriented Programming (OOP) for the Graphical User Interface (GUI). -JML
