Faith Lights a Flame by Loni Kemper Moore is a work of Clean Historical fiction. Seventeen-year-old Francesca “Chessa” Campbell wants nothing more than to have her perfect family back. But her father is on trial for murder. Her mother ends up becoming ill suddenly. Plus, Franchesca becomes the target of prejudice. Then one act changes her life. She finds herself having to navigate an unexpected future.

Walter Smythe heads west from Indiana in hopes of earning enough money to return to college and to forget the woman who jilted him. But life throws him a curve when he finds himself working as a teacher. When his path crosses with Franchesca, who is one of his students, life begins to change for both.

But when life throws him another curveball through an injury, the two come together as a couple. With life, including events like the dust storms in the midwest, the two have to really work to stay together and forge a future. Loni Kemper Moore does an excellent job developing the storyline and characters.

I love how family members, friends, and others add to the story. The author does an excellent job creating multi-dimensional characters that I wanted to read more about. So if you enjoy Clean historical fiction, check out this book for yourself.

It’s during the most difficult times that our strength is proven and faith tested, such as with Chessa and Walker in Faith Lights a Flame. This story showcases what life is like in the west during the 1920s, and what it takes to persevere. Everything was hard, and I certainly wouldn’t want to trade places.

Chessa and Walker are easy to relate to and empathize with. They are both wounded and must rely on their faith and each other to endure. It’s in darkness that light shines brightest though, with glowing blessings illuminating the way.

The author creates vivid imagery in her writing. The New Mexico dust storms, drought, and danger are palpable. The blend of danger, surprise, romance, and blessing make this wholesome story satisfying.

First Line: I was so distracted with whether I could, I neglected to examine if I should.

The story is one that will keep readers entertained as we follow two young people on an incredible journey. I enjoyed the time period and how it was easy to picture the town filled with historical facts. It was fun to read about the days when not everyone had electricity or even refrigerators. The washers were definitely not user friendly. What really captured my attention was the dust storms that blew through. If you have ever been in one you never forget it.

Chessa and Walker are wonderful characters and I liked how the author brought them together. The circumstances surrounding them brought them into an unlikely union which some didn’t approve of. I liked how Chessa cared for Walker as he recovered from a terrible accident. Walker also saves Chessa after an attack that leaves her shaken.

The author shows us how hard life was during this time period as our couple try to make a go of running a ranch. Their families give us a glimpse of how much they both wanted to be accepted by their fathers. It is interesting to me that they both had fathers who seemed to turn their back on their children. It does cause each of them to feel rejected and must continue to have faith that reconciliation will happen.

The story includes danger as evil tries to separate Walker and Chessa. They face hurt, loss and unexpected blessings along the way as they continue to overcome obstacles that try to tear them apart. I loved the illustration of forgiveness and the importance of faith that kept them from giving up.

I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.

The author takes us back to the late 1970’s where Tab was still a drink that was well liked. In the south we call all soft drinks Cokes. I loved how the author made the era exactly the way I remember it. I grew up in the seventies where the Vietnam War was a subject no one wanted to talk about.

TeJae was a flight attendant and loved her job. I remember thinking how cool it would be to be a flight attendant and travel all over the world. She is still grieving the loss of her brother and is angry with him. She never got to say goodbye and it pains her to have unfinished words she wanted to say to him. She meets interesting people on the flights. I really liked the description of the planes and the tasks that TaJae was expected to do during the flight.

When she meets Mikel while on a trip in Hawaii, she is a bit cautious of him. She finds out he is a chaplain in the army and I think that may have made her hold her feelings towards him at arms length. She is angry with God for taking her brother. Can Mikel help her through her grief? Can he lead her back to God? When a devastating accident occurs , TeJae is shaken to the core. Her foundation, her security is gone. How will she handle another loss of family members?

I loved how the author incorporated the famous basketball team known as the University of Evansville men’s team. They were very well liked and everyone in the town came to see them play. The authors knowledge of basketball and well known players make the story come alive. The tragedy of losing a basketball team was devastating for everyone. With the authors beautiful words, the scene came to life. I saw the destruction of a plane crash and heard the agony as loved ones were told the painful news of a death.

The story is filled with grief that only God can heal. I loved how the author wove a story of overcoming tragedy and the faith the characters found as they found forgiveness and love.

I received a copy of the book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.
