Geoffroy Monde

Fierce, a graphic novel illustrated by Mathieu Burniat and written by Geoffrey Monde, is a fun romp through the world of King Arthur well after he has passed his prime, to put it mildly.

I'll mention up front this is for adults or young adults. I saw no indication in any book description that would lead people to believe this is a children's book (or that it is a retelling of Arthurian legend, for that matter) but people seem to choose books based on what they want and a title, and if it isn't what they mistakenly thought it would be, it is somehow the book's fault. So, if you're one of those who don't read book descriptions before choosing a book (but then, why would you be reading someone's review, huh?), this isn't a children's book nor is it a graphic retelling of Arthurian legend, it is a humorous work that could also be considered somewhat satiric.

There, that is out of the way. This is not one of those books you read because you're looking for anything deep, you're reading it for entertainment. And the concept of a drunken old King Arthur letting himself and his kingdom go to ruin is made for fun. You do, however, get some interesting commentary along the way if you want to take something of value away. Such as when Ysa says "you're either a princess or a witch with these morons." Take from it what you will, but it sure sounds like a fairly accurate summation of how society largely views women.

I enjoyed the artwork and the story and would recommend it to readers who like far-fetched tales that use literary figures and worldscapes as fodder for completely new adventures.
