Gran compilación de historias quintaesenciales sobre samuráis. Tenemos tanto al samurái glorificado como al ruin y al traidor; abanicos de combate y batallas de flores, seppukus y espíritus que se niegan a abandonar este plano.

Las historias pueden parecen algo abruptas en sí mismas, pero hay que recordar que fueron escritas para ser representadas, no presentadas en prosa. No obstante, esto no va en detrimento de las obras, ya que se trata de esa simplicidad que torna imperecedero a un relato.

Muy informativo resulta en este caso el prólogo, en el que se describen las diversas corrientes del teatro japonés, y su influencia en la educación de las masas; que de otra manera no hubiesen tenido una tradición y unos valores como con los que cuenta el Japón hoy en día.

Somewhat difficult to follow at times,mainly due to the rather strange names that kept cropping up. On the other hand it is always fascinating to learn of new cultures and customs.½

An amazing book. The author's preface and annotations are particulary helpful. The book is filled with fold out color reproductions of Japanese paintings, art, drawings and washes. The first reproduction is of Mount Fuji, "from a picture presented to Fuhrer Adolf Hitler by the Department of Education."
The book is filled with poetry from the 7th century to the present,(1938) and includes amazing poems first in Japanese script, then in Japanese Roman (western) letters and then in English translation by the author. This anthology is an abridged and revised edition of Masterpieces of Japanese Poetry Ancient and Modern (1936). That would be a book to read!
