The first U.S. Officer to serve on the front, he kept a meticulous journal which he expanded during his court martial into a larger work, never published in book form. Filled with details on trench warfare, technical observations, descriptions of America's ""hat-in-the-ring"" fighter squadron, this somewhat subjective narrative does much to shed light on the personalities and events which shaped the first of the great global conflicts.
