- Raymond Maufrais was a French journalist and explorer. He disappeared in the jungle of French Guiana in January 1950. His body was never found.
Maufrais's father, Edgar, began looking for his son in 1952; he left his wife behind in Toulon. He traveled twelve thousand kilometers in twelve years.
He returned to Toulon in June 1964, exhausted; he died ten years later.
His wife slowly lost her mind and died in an asylum in Toulon in 1984

Interesting and easy to read, but brother was this guy dumb! Over and over he was given the opportunity to back out and it was obvious to everyone but himself that he was woefully unprepared, but his stubbornness cost him his life. I've seen man unprepared people in the backcountry, but this fellow might just top the list....
