Robert Mapplethorpe was een omstreden fotograaf. Omstreden vanwege de expiciete inhoud van zijn foto's (veelal van naakte zwarte mannen met enorme lullen) en bewonderd vanwege de prachtige kwaliteit van zijn werk, dat zo in het museum kan hangen. "Mapplethorpe" kan worden beschouwd als het ultieme overzichtswerk van de fotograaf. In het boek vooral naaktfoto's van zwarte mannen en verder een aantal portretten van beroemdheden (Patti Smith, Lisa Lyon, Bruce Chatwin, Philip Glass, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Andy Warhol en anderen) en zelfportretten, foto's van bloemen (behoren tot de mooiste bloemenfoto's die ik ooit heb gezien) en een aantal foto's van oude standbeelden. Het boek is prachtig uitgevoerd en de kwaliteit van de afdrukken laat niets te wensen over. Kortom een prachtig maar wel confronterend boek!
