I was born in Tennessee and lived there until I married my husband. My brother and I used to go on hikes on the weekend. I still like to go on hikes when I visit Tennessee twice a year. I thought I knew where all the good hiking trails were but this book introduced me to some that I was not aware of and would like to explore. I like it that each trail has a description. I'm partial to waterfalls so I'd be inclined to explore those. This book tells me where those all are. It has has a system of notating the difficulty of the trail. Instead of check marks it has boots. Very creative.

The only criticism I have of this book is that it is an oversize paperback. Bigger than trade size but small than a coffee table book. I think it would have been better if the book were half the size it was so it could fit in a backpack or in the glove box of my car.

I live in Arkansas, and waited until I hiked several trails in TN before reviewing. There is one thing that stands out above other hiking and backpacking guides I have utilized in the past. It has pertinent information. Also, the maps are clear.. easy to copy if needed, and not overloaded with historical sites that may not be of interest to 90% of hikers. This guide gives details about how to obtain permits if they are needed. Contact information available for the hikes also. It is unusual to find concise wayfinding on how to ge to the trails, or even where you can find restrooms. One of the best I have used, and have hiked southern, western, and southeastern states for 40 years. Well done.… (más)

Hiking Tennessee provides a sampling of hikes across Tennessee. The book is divided into West, Middle and East Tennessee. Each section contains hikes of varying lengths and degrees of difficulty with several in each section less than one mile and the longest 8.8 miles. Each hike gives area information, Directions, hours open, facilities, permits and rules and contact info for further information. The distance, level of difficulty and estimated hiking time are also included. Many of the trail directions also include GPS coordinates. I think the book is a great introduction to hiking in Tennessee as well as other points of interest and facts on the local area. The drawback to the book is that it is 8.5 x 11 inches, which in my opinion is too large to carry while hiking. Copying the page or pages specific to the hike you choose is a simple solution to the problem. I will be using the book the next time we visit TN.… (más)
