Yang Lian

Yang Lian is rightly one at the forefront of modern Chinese poetry, and the collected works in this edition demonstrate this. A daring Modernist, in Where the Sea Stands Still the themes of a search for mature wisdom, the accommodation of modernity within Chinese tradition, and the ordinariness of death and life all come together to create rather disturbing and eerie imagery.
The translations too are very good, Holton accurately translates the often-difficult language and imagery that Yang uses, while still maintaining the original voice of the poem.
