- Hannah Farnham Lee, née Sawyer, was the daughter of a physician. She began writing at about age 50. Her first known publication was the appendix to Miss Hannah Adams's memoir of herself. "Three Experiments of Living," published in 1838, has passed through more than of 30 editions in the United States, besides many in Europe. She was the author of numerous other works, many originally published anonymously, including Grace Seymour (1830), The Harcourts (1837), Elinor Fulton (1837), Historical Sketches of the Old Painters (1838), the two-volume historical work Huguenots in France and America (1843), The Log-Cabin: or, the World Before You (1844),
Memoir of Pierre Toussaint (1853), and History of Sculpture and Sculptors (1854).
