A childhood classic - well, a classic of my childhood, certainly. The charming tales of a kind, philosophical moose living in the wilds of Minnesota, always on his way home (but never seeming to arrive there). Along his way, he helps his friends, does kind things, is treated kindly by others, makes moose-ic (sorry, can't resist a pun), and asks a Skunk to be his valentine. Jim Latimer's very short stories are sweet, warm, read-together tales, and comforting to me in the same way as a toasty warm comforter and a mug of noodle soup (more childhood classics). Donald Carrick's watercolor illustrations are suffused with an otherworldly light, capturing summer in the lily marsh and winter in the cow fields with astonishing precision. The illustrations alone make this a true work of art to savor, but paired with Latimer's text the entire book exudes warmth and dreaminess and a quiet sort of joy that anyone who loves nature and nature's creatures can identify with.

Even getting stuck in a snow drift and waiting for the county plow to come isn't so bad when there's a friend willing to pass the time with you.

A moose walks home and meets other animals and has adventures. It goes through Christmas day, Valentine's day. He meets the Easter Rabbit. And shares with his friends on his birthday.

Latimer's humorous interpretation of the pied piper is very entertaining. I like that he put women in positions of power even though this story is from ancient times.

This book was ok but not really one of my favorites. This is a version of the classic Pied Piper. The Piper first leads the rats out of town, then the children when the mayor does not stay true to her word.

This story makes the pied piper Irish. He goes to Hamlin, Germany and leads the rats out, however when he goes for payment they refuse. So the pied piper and the alderman's daughter lead the children out of Hamlin. This is good story about children being saved from horrible people. It is also a warning that if the adults aren't nice the pied piper will come and take their children.

This story is the classic fairy tale, I think this would be better for older kids, although even I found it a little boring at times.
