This is a neat story. It's intriguing, thoughtful and beautifully written. What struck me most is the author's reverence for all things language: writing, words, communication and perception. It expands on these concepts in a fascinating way, through the interaction -- and romance -- between a human woman and a highly advanced alien. Awesome. It made me think about things.

Some books are easy to pigeonhole. Others are a challenge. IN RETROSPECT is like CSI in the Star Wars bar, not that the characters are different species, but any mystery taking place in the year 3324 has words and events, like time travel, that take a bit of adjusting. Once you get into the rhythm of the 34th century and peel back the folds of reality, you find yourself in a locked room whodunit that is both enjoyable and fascinating. The Oku have lost the fight against the Rasakans. It is believed General Zane might have been a traitor and now someone has killed him. To try to heal the divide between the Oku and Rasakans, Merit Rai is asked to help solve the general’s murder. This requires that Merit travel back in time to discover the identity of the killer. She is reluctant to help the Rasakans, but to keep her family safe she has no choice. There is a little something for everyone: romance, betrayal, distrust, high-tech, and a “didn’t see it coming” finale. If you haven’t sampled this author before, try THE MEASURE OF THE UNIVERSE for a “measure” of her talents.… (más)
