I learned a lot of stuff reading this bio. For example: I knew Michael invented the "Moonwalk" but he also invented the "Robot". How cool!! He did many amazing things through his career and his life was tragically cut short.

This graphic novel describes the nature of earthquakes. It explains the science behind what occurs during an earthquake. I have an audio CD of this book with two paper back copies as well. My students listen to the book during listening center in reading class to build background knowledge about land forms, which we were studying at the time in social studies.

See on blog. Thanks to Netgalley and Lerner Publications for sending me this book to review! I have never seen a film with Jennifer Lawrence as the main character before. In fact, I had heard of her only a few times until the casts of the Hunger Games were revealed. Initially I didn't believe she would be a great Katniss Everdeen, but after seeing some trailers of the film, I was completely convinced. She has that subtlety and sadness in her while playing Katniss, and also shows strength and determination. Now I'm looking forward to seeing her play this role on screen. I'm expecting great things from her! This book talks about Jennifer Lawrence's life in a nice chronological order, allowing readers to go along as years went by. Since her childhood, Jennifer Lawrence knew she wanted to be an actress, and she was determined to be a successful one. It mainly focuses on how she pursued her acting career, the roles she's played, the films she has starred in (ex. Winter's Bone, X-Men: First Class, etc.), all building up to the point where she landed the role -- the biggest and most challenging one ever in her career -- of Katniss Everdeen in the film adaptation of The Hunger Games trilogy originally written by Suzanne Collins. Readers will find this book easy to read and go along with. There are pictures supporting the content of the book such as pictures of Jennifer Lawrence in various awards celebrations, stills of her in her previous films, etc. This biography is brief, not too detailed, with pictures every few pages, and a list of important dates for her at the end. Jennifer Lawrence is really an inspiration. She's determined, and when she sets her mind on something, she'll work hard, and she'll get it, as told in this little biography. Now we can sit back and wait until The Hunger Games film hits cinemas in this upcoming March 23, 2012, and see for ourselves Jennifer Lawrence's role of Katniss Everdeen. See on blog.

Vera Wang is an excellent choice for a middle school Lifeline biography series. Wang, a successful, well respected fashion designer and brand icon, who through her hard work, enthusiasm and high creative energy, serves as a down to earth role model for young girls interested in fashion and design.

Lifeline picks up a continuing thread in Wang's raise to the status of fashion icon: her early deferential attitudes towards her parents. Her father's guidance and enormous financial support in the beginning of her bridal design business allowed her to make fortuitous decisions which set her apart in the highly competitive fashion design industry. This respect for family is an encouraging note to middle schoolers who want to spread their own wings so early in life.

Lifeline also sets a realistic tone to Wang's biography by letting Wang voice her own insecurities in regard to the success of her business. It is these self-doubts that make Wang push harder and longer to stay current, come up with the right dress designs, which have revolutionized women's evening wear in the 1990's, and make business moves that have made her brand an multimillion dollar business.. But the overall feeling the young reader will come away with is the Vera Wang has a true love and passion for design and beautiful fabrics and clothes. The numerous photos and news clippings of her design awards, evening wear, bridal gowns and haute couture, worn on the red carpet, are a testament to her talent.

The biography also includes a detailed timeline, an in-depth glossary on fashion related terms, and further readings and websites on Wang and the fashion industry.

USA Today is a very reliable and trusted source. There are many biographies on Oprah Winfrey but I found this one to be very informative and easy to read for young readers.

Interesting and eminently readable, this book serves to highlight a few notable women of the "Wild West" (such as Calamity Jane, Annie Oakley, Belle Starr, Laura Ingalls Wilder, "The Unsinkable Molly Brown," and a few others.) It is by no means an exhaustive or in-depth look into what life was like for pioneer women, nor is it intended to be. As biographies go, these are rather brief, but the author does a nice job of giving the reader a good overall sense of who these women were, and what made them stand out from the rest. There are plenty of historical photos to help make the Old West come to life. Suitable for middle school and upper elementary grades.
