In der Villa „Pirasol“ leben zwei alte Damen. Gwendolin ist die Eigentümerin der Villa, die die jüngere Thea bei sich aufgenommen hat. Aber es ist keine Wohngemeinschaft auf Augenhöhe, denn Thea nutzt es schamlos aus, dass sich Gwendolin nicht wehren kann.
Am Anfang ist es mir recht schwer gefallen, in die Geschichte hineinzufinden, da die Zeiten immer wieder wechseln. Doch schon sehr bald hat mich das Buch dann vollkommen in den Bann gezogen.
Gwendolin hat es nie leicht gehabt in ihrem Leben. Nachdem im Krieg Vater und Mutter verschwunden sind, musste sie sich durchschlagen. Später ging sie eine Ehe mit Willem ein, der sich dann als Despot herausstellte. Sie begehrt nicht auf, auch wenn das „Armband“ die Gewalt Willems dokumentiert. Auch wenn er den Jungen quält und einsperrt, wehrt sie sich nicht. Dann ist der Junge weg, sie wird irgendwann Witwe und nimmt Thea auf. Welches Druckmittel hat Thea in der Hand, dass sie so auftreten kann?
Oft hätte ich Gwendolin schütteln können, um sie aufzufordern, sich zu wehren. Aber vielleicht wird man so, wenn das Schicksal einen beutelt.
Am Ende überrascht mich nicht nur Gwendolin.
Es ist ein Buch, das berührt und einem lange im Gedächtnis bleibt.… (más)

Mascha is determined to find a way to protect them since none of the adults in her life seem to want to admit that Max and Julia are being abused. This is an important, powerful, well-written novel for tweens, with a brave, enterprising young heroine, about the very serious, and often hidden, subject of child abuse.
