Lassie is Joe's prize collie and constant companion. But when Joe's father loses his job, Lassie must be sold. Three times she escapes from her new owner, and three times she returns home to Joe, until finally she is taken to the remotest part of Scotland--too far a journey for any dog to make alone . . .

Slavný příběh o lidské bídě a psí věrnosti má i svoji filmovou podobu.

A reread from childhood. What can be said of this original classic? Some situations In this book may strike younger generations as strange if they don’t know their history. The way of life, the cruelty, women’s work being very much a part of the home, but the only real warning this book requires for animal and dog lovers, is a box of tissues required. A beautiful keepsake featuring one of the most famous dogs of all time.

When a family falls on hard times, they sell their beloved collie Lassie. Unhappy in her new home, the collie escapes and undertakes a 1,000 mile journey to return to her former master. Beautifully written, wonderful black and white illustrations, a classic to be read again and again.

One of the great noir novels, it's the Grapes of Wrath of pulp and a keen indictment of California glitterati. There is everything to love about this book.

The classic children's book Lassie Come-Home by Eric Knight was originally published in 1940. Having stood the test of time, this story is as appealing today as it has been for generations of dog-lovers. I grew up watching the TV program "Lassie" but had never read the original story. I was surprised by the English setting having assumed the story, like the tv show, was American.

Both Yorkshire and the Scottish Highlands are vividly portrayed in this book, and the beautiful collie dog that takes center stage is described almost as royalty. Lassie was a special dog and her love for her master could not be quelled or her homing instinct changed no matter how far away she was taken. Her struggles to get back to her "boy" carried her the length of Scotland and back into England and along the way she encountered both bad situations and good ones.

I am a dog lover and this book spoke to my heart. I was rooting for Lassie to find her way home and was thrilled at the outcome of the book. I don't know how I missed this book when I was young, but if I had come across it, it would have had a place of honor on my shelves.

A completely deserved cult classic, and one of the shrewdest books ever written about California.

This one really brought back memories. I was glad that my copy had maps on the endpapers. I liked following Lassie's journey. My Vintage Book Circle book group seemed to enjoy it too. We all wondered how true to the story the seven movies were. I love a happy ending.

115. Lassie Come-Home, by Eric Knight (read early 1943) I know I much appreciated this book, which was very famous when I read it as a freshman in high school.

Is one of those stories that the movie and the book are really good.

For dog lovers is wonderful, because is a heartwarming story full of adventure. This book is a about Joe and his dog Lassie. They love each other and play together. One day Lassie is taken far way from him...in fact his parents sold Lassie because they have no money!! and Joe is devastated, he needs Lassie to be happy.

However, Lassie escapes and travels approximately one thousand miles south to return home. Her journey is full of obstacles. Lassie encounters good and bad people and animals and suffers injuries... but at the the end she finds her home full of love and belly rub.

A very strange book. Definitely not hardboiled noir in the sense of Hammett, Chandler, or Cain. More of a satire on California and Hollywood in particular, seen through the eyes of an outsider, which perhaps mirrors the author's own experience moving from England to the USA in his teens, then going on to become a Hollywood scriptwriter. For the most part, rather well written, but the characters tend to be rather mysterious with motivations (even of the protagonist) that aren't very apparent. The noir is blunted by the fact that we like the protagonist -- even as he does some things that aren't very admirable. The most mysterious character is his new love, the "Naked Mermaid" he meets in one of the strangest and most dreamlike passages I've ever read. The whole book has the atmosphere of a dream, in fact.

Read the ending a couple of times. I guess I was in a hurry to finish it the first time, and I kind of missed the implications.

So not classic noir, but definitely unique.

Without doubt Lassie was the finest collie in all of Yorkshire. For three years the Duke of Rudling tried without success to buy the dog from her owner, Sam Carraclough. But hard times came and Sam was forced to sell her so that he could feed the family. Sam's boy, Joe, was heartbroken, and Lassie long for her young master. Time and again she escaped and came home to Joe, only to be returned to the Duke by Sam. Then Lassie was taken to the Scottish Highlands. But she was undaunted and set out on a 400-mile journey over unfamiliar country to return to her beloved Joe. When the Duke finally realized that nothing could keep Lassie and the boy apart, he solved the problem in a way that brought happiness to all concerned.

Since its original publication in 1940, Lassie Come-Home has sold more than 1 million copies in the English language and has been translated into 24 foreign languages. This new paperback edition contains the illustrations in the authors changes and corrections as they appear in the 30th anniversary hardcover edition.
