I just happened to come across an audiobook of this story recently, when I needed something to listen to. What a great story! I’ve loved Jim Kjelgaard’s works for years; he does an excellent job capturing the hearts and temperaments of the animals he writes about and has an excellent grasp on people and what makes them tick. I also love his description of nature—you feel like you’re there when you’re reading his books.

This was a fascinating story. There was a bit of mystery, some danger, and a lot of adventure in this short book. It’s perfect for children who don’t mind seeing a little of the realities of life, and love a good animal story. It also has a fascinating theme of forgiveness vs. greediness—I enjoyed seeing how that worked out in the story. Overall, a great read. If I ever find a print copy, I’ll be picking it up!

I read a million of these dog books as a kid-- for a year or so, Kjelgaard was my favorite author. Only slightly spoiled by my dad telling me that Irish Setters are the dimmest of the dim dogs.

A good survival tale of a racing dog in the desert. By author of Big Red. I'm guessing on when I read it.

I was impressed by this book I read when quite young. An Apache youth escapes from a white school to go back to his people. One memory I have of it is that he had to eat a frog! Good story. Just a guess on the date.

Good outdoor adventure story. I remember he used a flashbulb to scare away a bear.

Great story. Kjelgaard _doesn't_ give way to his habit of writing magic dogs - Pal is just a dog, though he does show up very conveniently a few times. I like both Jeff and Dan. Hope it works out for them.

I read this to my 9-year-old daughter over the course of a week or two. I don't think I read it as a child myself, but it's in the same vein as many other famous dog stories and/or a kid getting by in the wilderness on their own. No surprises, but what we expected from the story is what we were looking for so we both enjoyed it.

Review by fuzzi Dec. 13 2017 - This is a series of short stories about early American pioneers, mountain men, trappers, and settlers, all heading west from the safety of civilization. The author has taken historic accounts and fleshed them out into involving tales of bravery.

Jim Kjelgaard was one of my favorite authors when I was a boy. His books were full of adventures outdoors and nature. The Lost Wagon was written for adults. It touches on mature themes of commitment loyalty self-sacrifice and persistence. I was surprised at how well he covered these themes. I still prefer his juvenile fiction but I would have liked to tell him this was well done. Unfortunately Kjelgaard died in 1959.

Jim Kjelgaard wrote young adult fiction, mostly directed for boys, until his death in 1960. As a boy he was one of my favorite authors. He wrote about nature and outdoor activities and captivated boys like me. Double Challenge was new to me though it was published in 1957, the year I was eight. It follows that same pattern of most of Kjelbaard's books, a young man with a dog overcome obstacles in the woods. In this one it reads as a mystery where Ted, the main character, tries to find who committed the attempted murder his father has been accused of. I am not a boy anymore but I still love Kjelgaard's books.

I read many of Jim Kjelgaards young adult books when I was a boy. The younger me was mostly a non-fiction reader but Kjelgaard wrote about the what interested me most; wild animals, wilderness, woodcraft skills and adventure. Most of his protagonists were smart, educated young men or boys. That is the protagonists who were not animals. In The Duck-footed Hound all the male characters are rather dim. Harky, a twelve year old boy, and the men around him are all illiterate or nearly so and full of superstitions including believing there are witches in the woods. Coon hunting with coon dogs is everyone's passion. It is a mostly male world, Harky has no mother and lives alone in a shack with his father. When a neighbor, who has thirteen daughters and no sons , sends his daughter to a coon hunt he can't attend everything changes. Will the belief that coon hunting is only for men survive this, or will something else happen? The Duck-footed Hound reminded me a bit of the raccoon hunt in Ernest Thompson Seton's Two Little Savages and the dumbness of the characters called Tobacco Road to mind.

I enjoyed this book. It's a lovely dog story.

I did some how get a nightmare about it. It's not the sort of book I would associate with nightmares.

There were a whole series of Kjelgaard paperback novels at my library -- probably purchased to appeal to boy readers -- but I read through them along with the "Lad: A Dog" series and the Black Stallion books. I remember the copy I had had a red border around the edge. And I also remember being astonished at the fact that a boy could live in a cabin all by himself with a dog while his father was in jail.
