Structured as a study of how administrative and intellectual spaces interact with geographical space, the author examines what happened when Lawrence Livermore Lab, that hot-house flower of the Cold War, came into contact with the real world of human communities and political debate, and had their self-image of being masters of nuclear power challenged by the people who would have to live with the results. If nothing else this history of Project Plowshare can be taken as a case study of the resilence and tenacity of bureaucratic organizations once a mission statement has been established and funding appropriated.… (más)
