In the early 1940s, Maud Oaks received a grant from the Mellon's, who later founded the Bollingen Foundation, to make field recordings of Navajo teachings and ceremonies, during that time she meet the "ancient Navajo medicine man" Jeff King on the Navajo reservation in New Mexico, to record his ceremonies and paintings. The recording of King's war ceremony and Maud's gouache renderings of King's sand painting from that ceremony became the volume Where the Two Came to Their Father originally published in 1943 as a 92 page booklet. Jeff King was a respected medicine man, and approx 76 years old in the fall of 1942.
