Review of the Spaceward paperback edition (2010)
I was sufficiently impressed with Keeling's analysis of the 1969 prog rock classic In the Court of the Crimson King to seek out his analysis of the 1970 follow-up albums. This second book leans heavily on the musical analysis and score transcriptions though and has less of the story of the musicians behind the scenes. That makes it of less interest for the general reader but possibly still a must-have for musically literate fans.
As in the first book, there is great amount of musical terminology that is used, but this time there is a glossary that is provided. For some reason, the word anacrusis seemed to be the most commonly used, so you should familiarize yourself with that one before even starting.
The transcriptions go so far as to present a complete score of the "In the Wake of Poseidon" track aside from the excerpts of passages from other works, so that is pretty impressive. You'll need to photo enlarge the book's images by 400 to 1000% though before you would have a usable copy however.… (más)
