This story is about a girl that wanted to play soccer with the other kids at her school, but they wouldn’t let her play with them. One of the little boys speaks out and says that the little girl, May, can be on his team and play. The story is just about how they pass back and forth the ball and the team that May is on wins! The author does a good job of subtly encouraging children to not bully and to always include others! This book is for primary students.

The two characters featured in this picture book are realistic looking dogs except for the fact that they behave like people. A parent is followed from task to task by his or her eager child. One of the nice things about this book is that it doesn’t disclose whether it is a father or mother being followed by a daughter or son. Any parent and child can relate to the story.

The adult mows, hoes, pulls weeds, plants, sweeps, and more. The child asks, “Can I help…” every time and the parent responds, “Yes, please help me…” Most of the time the child’s “help” causes problems for the adult but instead of shooing away the young child, the adult continually encourages his or her participation. The story ends with parent and child cuddling in a hammock.

This story is written in a comfortable rhyming style, a single sentence per page except in the summary of each section. An attentive child will soon memorize the words.

What a beautiful message! Children want to feel helpful and capable. They want to participate in our world. They want to emulate us. They need our encouragement, not our criticism. They grow and blossom when included.

I enjoyed this book and its “big idea”. I decided to pick this book to widen my horizon. I am always grabbing baseball books or history but instead I picked a book about a girl in gymnastics. The story is about a character named Ella. She packs her bag and heads to gymnastic practice. The character has a positive attitude shown by the great illustrations. She is smiling throughout the book, heading to the gym, watching her friends and getting up on the balance beam. She falls off the balance beam and she tries to give up. When she falls off in front of her friends and says “I give up” they don’t let her. There isn’t much development of the character but you can tell from lines like “I will try again” that she’s a strong individual. She continues to mess up but that doesn’t stop her from getting back up and trying again. The point of view is first person told by the little girl Ella. It’s a good perspective cause you get to see her view of what is happening in the book. You get to see her emotion about failure when she says “Down I go, I give up”. The language is simple and friendly. It shows friends encouraging her to keep trying. One of the friends Jane says “Don’t give up” and it encourages her to try again. The big idea of this book is to never give up and if you see someone failing, help them get up and try again.

This is a simple and sweet story about determenation. The little girl admires a fellow student in her gym class and wants to be as good as her. Upon trying she falls and loses hope, but with her friend Jan's helpful words to not give up, she trys again a succeds. This could show kids how not to give up on things so easily. With a little persistence, you can achieve for goals.

A bit of a variation on 'The Three Bears' with chairs that are too hard, too soft, too big, too little and just right.

Little Fox breaks his mother's chair. What are they going to do when the search for a replacement is unsuccessful? A cute story.½
