In the post-Civil War in the South. Virgie, the youngest in a family of boys, vows that she will accompany her brothers when they walk the seven miles to school every Monday morning. All Virgie wants is to go to school with her brothers George, Will, Nelson, Val, and C.C. But they keep saying she's too little for the long, seven-mile walk, and that girls don't need school. Nelson believes that girls need to read and write and do arithmetic too just like boys. Well, Virgie doesn't agree, and she's not gonna let anything stand in her way.

Good book about the distance a young girl is willing to travel with her brothers to attend school. A long wearisome 7-mile journey isn't enough of a deterrence for Virgie. Her ambitions will not be thwarted by any means, her going to school and learning is a dream and urgency. I enjoyed the story, however, I think it was contextually thin.

Reading this book brought back a lot of memories with my own grandmother. This book was about Lulu, the grandmother and her two grandchildren Laurie, and J Matthew. Lulu can't decide where she wants to celebrate her birthday at. In the past they have celebrated it at the zoo, the beach, the movies, the ball park and many more places. As Lulu and her grandchildren talk about how much fun they had celebrating their grandmother's birthday at these different places, they cannot figure out where to celebrate this birthday at. Laurie and J Matthew have an idea! They bring Lulu down stairs and SURPRISE!!!! They put together a surprise birthday party for their grandmother with all their family members there! Lulu was so surprised and this was the best birthday ever, just having her whole family there together. It remind me of times with my grandmother and how she would always spend my birthdays with me, and that was the best gift ever, because now I have those memories to look back on and forever cherish them. Lulu will now have this memory also and she too can cherish this birthday and everyone that was there to help her celebrate it.

Young Virgie does not get discouraged as her male siblings try to discourage her from going to school. She insists that school is just as important for girls as it is for boys and her persistence influences her parents to allow her to go to school the following school year, although she may tire by the 7 mile trek to school. Virgie endures the obstacle of the long hike with a light and ever persistent heart. Upon arrival to school she is amazed by all of the books and exited to share all that she has learned with her parents.

Virgie Goes to School with Us Boys was a good book. It showed that for the most part, boys would go to school rather than girls during the Civil War. This concept did not sit well with Virgie, the boys youngest sister. She wanted to go to school with her brothers. After days of asking to go to school with the boys, her parents finally told the boys that the next Monday they go into town for school that Virgie would go with them. When they all got to school Virgie was amazed by all of the books on the bookcase and everything in the classroom. Virgie wanted to go back home and tell her mother and father all about school and how learning was free.
I think it was good that Virgie was able to experience school during this time. The world we live in is a free place and we have equal opportunities for everyone no matter their race or gender. We should never leave people out because they seem "different" than we are, everyone has equal rights.½

This book is at first glance, is a book about a girl's relationship with her aunt who lives in Baltimore but later is seen to be a historical book about the Baltimore City fire in 1905. Each of Aunt Flossie's hats, tell a story so this acts a historical book as well with real life historical events. This book is not only relatable as an aunt and niece relationship but also explains the historical events of Baltimore for children that did not live in that time period. This book is developmentally appropriate for grades 4 and 5 since the details are more vivid and the events of the past are harder to grasp

The narrator is named C.C. but the story is about his sister, Virgie. She wants to go to school with all her brothers. This is around the time Lincoln abolished slavery. Black people can go to school now and get educated but most women didn't. A lot of people believe women don't need education, including some of the brothers. After Virgie non-stop asks her family/ parents to go school, they finally agree. They say when the next school year starts, she can go. She waits for summer to pass and can finally take the 7 mile walk to town where the school is. Some of her brothers think she still is too small for school but she makes the walk, keeping up with her brothers the whole way. She meets the headmaster and introduces herself. Virgie can't wait for Friday to come to so she can tell her parents what she learned; that way, they'll be learning too.

This story is based in history on real characters and set in the post Civil War Reconstruction period outside of Jonesborough Tennesse. It revolves around a character named C.C. Fitzgerald, who is the author's grandfather and his many siblings. Virgie is the youngest and the only girl in the household. She is constantly begging to go to school with her brothers but everyone tells her she is too little, too weak to make the 7-mile walk, and too scared to be without her parents for 5 days in a row, but she is not deterred. Finally, her father laments and allows her to go. He realizes that she deserves the right to attend school as every other freed person. In a surprise twist, it is Virgie who soothes her brother's fears as they journey through the scary forest. She begins to sing and they all join in which seems to put them at ease.

“Virgie Goes to School with Us Boys is about a young African American girl name Virgie that wants to attend school with her brothers. The story takes place right after African American children are allowed to attend school. All of Virgies brothers disagree with Virgie attending school and complained to the Papa that she would not be able to make the 7-mile trip to the school . Virgie was determined and excited to attend school and everything her brothers told her did not make her lose focus on attending school. Once Virgie made it to school with her brothers she was introduced to the headmaster of the school. When Virgie went into the school she was so excited and touched all the different books on the shelf she had seen. She was happy to be in school and her plan was to take her knowledge and tell her parents to make everyone feel like they are free.

I loved reading this book because it sends a message outside of telling about African American history. It also tells readers to not give up in what they believe in.

This book tells the tale of a small girl and her desire to go to school. For me, young Virgie and her journey to school with her brothers, represents the experiences that women bring to the work place or to the school with men and the desire that we all have to learn. What is most interesting about this book is that it is all based on a true story and about a real family.

This is a great book that teaches children the importance of history, memories and family. Aunt Flossie’s two nieces come over every Sunday. Besides spending time with their aunt, they love trying on her beloved hats and hearing the stories behind them. Aunt Flossie has a memory connected to every hat. Whether is be a historical event, a holiday, or a funny memory each hat comes with a rich story. This is a great book to use for a think aloud. Students can make predictions, personal connections and visualizations. This is a great book to read allowed to 1-3 grade and can be read independently 4-6 grade.

This is a phenomenal picture book to share with students when teaching about the importance of memories, loved ones, and historical events. This book is about an aunt and two children who are interested in their aunt's hats and the stories that she has associated with each one. For every hat that the children pick out, the aunt begins telling them about the event that she went through at the time she wore that specific hat. These events range from tragic fires in Baltimore to soldiers returning home from World War 1. The illustrations within the book are drawn in a way that look old and outdated, which adds to the theme of the book and aides children when they are predicting what the book is going to be about, during a picture walk. A think aloud would be appropriate when reading this book to children because they could very easily make predictions, connections, and visualize.

This story is great and can be used for so many purposes. It tells the story of two children, Sarah, and a who visit their Great-Great Aunt Flossie every Sunday afternoon. Aunt Flossie has a very crowded house, which is mostly filled with boxes of hats that she has collected over the years. The girls enjoy trying on the hats. Each hat comes with a story that Aunt Flossie tells as each one is significant. For example, one smells like smoke and this is significant because she wore it when she witnessed the Great Baltimore Fire. Another one is significant as she wore it when American soldiers came home from World War 1. The story is narrated by the little girl Susan and captures the importance of learning about family heirlooms, traditions, stories, and history. This would be cool to read as well since it takes place in Baltimore and discusses some of the events that have happened in Baltimore throughout history. When reading a think aloud strategy can be used by the teacher to get students to make connections, predictions, visualizations, and assist with questioning in stories. This book would be good to use with students in first through fifth grade.

This book was great to use for a Think Aloud. As you read the book aloud to the class you can model what thinking aloud looks like by making predictions, having the children make predictions, visualizing, making connections, asking questions like I wonder...., summarizing, and reviewing your opinion of the book. It also is a great way for students in the Baltimore area to learn history about where they live. It also brings up family traditions getting the students connected to their own families and being able to share traditions with their peers.

It was wonderful that Virgie wants to go to school with her brothers. She wanted to learn new things and get to express her freedom like her brothers. I thought it was interesting that they stayed at the school for a whole week. It seems crazy that it was too far for them to go back and forth each day. Seven miles seems long, but I wouldn't think that it would take long enough to need to stay there all week. She is very determined to learn. I think that is wonderful. I also think it was great that she didn't back down about asking to go to school. She finally got her way, and she is going to learn wonderful things.

I want to do Elizabeth Fitzgerald Howard for my author study.

It was a very nice book about Sarah and Susan getting to spend time with their great-great-aunt Flossie. It was really cool that she kept all her hats and was able to recall stories about when and where she wore the hats. It also meant that the girls could hear about Flossie's life and play dress-up at the same time. I think this would be good book for children to read, so they can understand how important the past is.

I am going to do Elizabeth Fitzgerald Howard for the author study.

It was a very nice Christmas story. I really liked how Chita got to pick out the Christmas tree that she wanted and that Santa was going to bring it too her. It was very cute that all she really cared about and wanted for Christmas was the tree. Chita knew that Christmas was an important time to spend with family. She knew that the gifts weren't the most important thing about Christmas. It is important to tell the class that there are other holidays that people celebrate but this is the holiday that Christians celebrate in the winter time.

I want to do Elizabeth Fitzgerald Howard for my author study.

It was a wonderful book. However, this book might be too long for kindergartners and 1st graders at the beginning of the year. The book can be broken up into two days if it is being read to a younger age group. This would give the teacher a change to ask her class questions about the story before they start reading it again to see what they remember about the book. It was a very cute story that stressed the importance of a father and daughter spending time together. It is important for children, especially at a young age, to spend time with the guardians. I think this book would provide a good opportunity to explain to the class that they should also spend time with their family members/guardians. The teacher could also take time to say that everyone has different types of families and maybe ask some of the class to describe what their family is like.

The book was very sweet. I really enjoyed how Chita was chiming in the story. It made the story very interesting and showed that Chita and her father spend a lot of time together, because she knew at least one story that he has told her many times and enjoys hearing it.

I really want to do Elizabeth Fitzgerald Howard for the author study.

The book has beautiful pictures that really showed the emotions of the characters in the book. It showed when they were happy, sad, scared, etc. It provided nice paintings that represented the cities very well. It also gave insight of what it was like for children to travel alone on a train and that it is okay to be scared. The book gave a good example of sisters bonding and how it is important you help your younger sibling to not feel afraid.

I really enjoy the stories Elizabeth Fitzgerald Howard writes. I want to do Elizabeth Fitzgerald Howard for the author study.

The illustrations are my favorite thing about this book! I love them, they're detailed, and you have to look at them to notice the things going on in the background. I had to go back twice before I noticed what was happening! Lulus Birthday is about two kids, Laurie, and J. Matthew; they're talking about how they want to celebrate Lulus birthday. Lulu is their great aunt, and throughout the book, they're talking about fun places they've been before and had a fun time. They want to go to the zoo or the beach, while they're speaking in the living room you notice if you're looking closely at the pictures behind them, through the window, people are walking around holding balloons and presents. From this, you can expect that the kids already planned a surprise party for Lulu and they're trying to distract her by suggesting different places to go for her birthday.

This book was incredible! I really loved how the book was sectioned off by each event that lead up to the wedding. The book might be a little long for kindergartners and first graders at the beginning of the year to read straight through, but because the book is divided into sections, teachers could just read a section or two in one sitting. The main character, Sarah, is someone that everyone can relate too. Everyone gets anxiety and exaggerates the worst possible outcome.Sarah was still very sweet and even helped her little cousin, Willie, by telling him it was okay even though she was still scared about being the flower girl. The moral of this story is how important family is and to push through and conquer your fears. The illustrations were also incredible. They really expressed the emotions of the characters well and all of the colors used really correlated with those emotions.

More than anything, Virgie wants to go to school like her five older brothers do, but is hindered by her parent's protests. As well, Virgie's brothers share their protest by explaining that it is a waste of time for girls to go to school and she could not make the seven-mile walk to school. However, Virgie bravely stands up for herself and proves them wrong.

This book is set during the reconstruction about a girl named Virgie who wants to go to school just like her brothers. She asked her mama and papa every day if she could go to school. Finally, they said yes because Virgie has the right to an education too. Virgie shows the importance of fighting for equal educational opportunities and freedom for girls and women.

This book was about the freedom to learn. At the time of the setting of the book, blacks finally became free to get an education but in this family, only the boys were going to school. Virgie, their younger sister, wanted to go to school with them. Her parents finally allowed her to go with the boys to school and she truly felt free; she loved it. Virgie was brave and wanted to feel her freedom by getting and education.½
