True to life back during this era, this novel is a nice slower paced read, though I did feel like it was unnecessarily long. Many of the scenes could’ve been condensed to create a better flow, but despite the length I still felt a draw to come back to read this rustic narrative. Showing the blessings and struggles with living a rural life in the mid to late-1800’s Heart’s Journey is a heartwarming story that shows what can happen when you put your trust in the Lord and live by faith.
I love the riches to poor troupe and watching Jacob and Julia’s love and faith grow and strengthen over time through various trials and tribulations. The imagery of early life in Iowa was immensely vivid, and paints a wonderful picture of this quaint farming town. All of the characters are warm and well fleshed out, to the point that there was one character that was particularly grating on my nerves. Faith plays a major role in this novel and almost feels like it’s own character. The ending was very sweet and, though part of it was predictable, there was a nice little surprise that left a smile on my face.
If you’re looking for a slow-paced read full of heart and faith then I can confidently say you’ve found the perfect novel for you. I enjoyed this more than I thought I would and am so glad I took the time to give it a chance.
