This was an excellent introduction to a new series, and straightaway you buy into Beth and what she is doing, even if it isn’t by the book! This book moves along at pace and you just do not want to put it down. I can’t wait for the opportunity to continue with this series.

This was my first book by this author but based on the excellent plotting, characters and the storyline it certainly won’t be my last. You shouldn’t like what Beth is doing but she quickly has you on side and you are supporting her all the way. I also felt the narration in this one was very strong, with a good narrator and for me this only added to the book.

I am happy to recommend this book to others, especially if they enjoy high quality crime fiction.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.½

Dark Angel by D.K. Hood
Detective Beth Katz #1

Definitely fiction and not terribly believable at times but an interesting look at a, to me, rather big “what if”. What if a psychopathic serial killer with the motive of eradicating evil serial killers became an FBI agent and used access to files to track her evil prey down.

What I liked:
* The plot, pacing, setting, and potential of the story
* Meeting many of the characters that will no doubt show up throughout the series
* The introduction to Beth and her new partner Dax and their get acquainted dance as they begin to work together
* Bear: Belgian Malinois, K-9, rescued by and partners with Dax, highly trained
* The police procedural aspects of the story
* The potential suspects that were offered that might be the killers
* That the Pied Piper serial killer was eventually arrested
* Wanting to know more about the supporting characters
* Wondering how the series will be developed and move forward

What I didn’t like:
* Who and what I was meant not to like
* Wondering how Beth, if really a psychopathic serial killer, would be hired by the FBI and then wondering if perhaps she is NOT then what is she really

Did I like this book? Yes, mostly
Would I read more in this series? I think so, though I did miss book two in the series so maybe not

Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for the ARC – This is my honest review.

3-4 Stars½

I still hate getting into the mind of a serial murderer who does it for his reprehensible reasons. But getting into the mind of FBI special agent Beth Katz who is a hereditary serial killer whose prey are the monster is more than OK with me. The FBI is unaware of this aspect of her life but had sent her off to the wilds of Montana to work with Agent Dax Styles who is an unrepentant loner who always gets the job done. This time the monster is targeting young women employed as pole dancers. He not only has an agenda, but he has rituals about the death and beyond. Beth takes matters into her own hands and...

Special Agent Beth Katz is exceptional. She is also a serial killer intensely focused on the monsters who prey on children. The FBI is unaware of this aspect of her life but send her off to the wilds of Montana to work with Agent Dax Styles who is an unrepentant loner who always gets the job done. Except for this one particular serial killer who has been around a very long time and has moved into Montana.
Voice actor Lauryn Allman is an interesting choice as narrator whose best talent is ratcheting up the tension.

Beth is a psychopath. She tells us this at the very beginning of the story. Her father was a serial killer, and he caused something to be broken within her. But she has honed her psychopathy for vengeance and has pledged to take down all serial killers, sometimes killing them herself (yes, like Dexter). She is the Tarot Card killer, named became she leaves behind Tarot cars near the victims. She even becomes an FBI agent to be able to track them down.

She and her partner are assigned to a case in a small town in Montana, where a school girl goes missing. It becomes clear that there's a killer at work, the Pied Piper, who is using tricks to lure innocent children to come to him.

This was really neat. I always love morally dubious characters. I loved Dexter, so of course I loved Beth another "good" psychopathic murderer.

4.5 stars rounded up. Thank you Bookouture Audio for giving me an advanced review copy of this audiobook in exchange for an honest review.

This was a good book. The thread of Kane's story kept me reading and may have me reaching for book 2.

I loved this book! I was engaged from the first page and couldn't put the book down until I had read through it completely in one sitting. There was one issue that I have though. Around page 60 Lindy's body is found. However, there was no build up from the police officers working a scene before it is announced that the body was found. The reader finds out when Jenna mentions it as a past event. I think this is a mistake, but only because I have never read a mystery where the discovery of the body is not fully developed. It should be essential to the rest of the story. The rest of the story was intense and fast paced and the ending resolved all of the questions concerning the crimes. Again, I take issue with how Jenna resolved the crime. She didn't. The killer appeared in her home and told her who he was and that she was going to be his next killing. Jenna had no idea who the serial killer was until he showed up in her kitchen. The killer conveniently spilled out answers to the who, how and why questions about his crime spree before being handcuffed. While the beginning and ending were a little unorthodox, Whisper is still a fantastic novel because of the intense suspense the author created.

I think this series will now become one of my top favorite series. Detectives Kane and Alton have become a part of my family along with the rest of their team. In the 10th book in the series we finally get to the case that brought Kane to Black Rock Falls. Someone is killing families and the killer's signature looks a lot like the one from D.C. years earlier. FBI agents Jo Wells and Ty Carter are back to help along with Carter's bomb canine, Zorro. I haven't been able to put this series down since I started it and was excited when Netgalley gave me the chance to read and review the newest installment. You definitely won't be disappointed if you love a good detective novel.

Why do bad things keep happening in Black Rock Falls? Who knows, but Sheriff Alton, Deputy Kane, and the rest of the gang are always up to the task of finding out who the baddies are. In book 11 a popular cheerleader is missing and her dad doesn't seem quite as concerned as he should be. Is he involved? Or is it the photographer whose photos seem to be a little too friendly? The Black Rock Falls Sheriff's Dept must find out before more girls disappear.

Another great book! I can stay up until 2 am reading these books. I hope she keeps on going with this series! Thank you, Bookouture and NetGalley for the ARC.

**Hold, please, while I catch my breath**
Holy smokes! This book is one intense ride, I didn't want to put it down. I was up until 2 am and had to force myself to go to sleep. Then I woke up and needed to finish it! The Detectives Kane and Alton Series is one of my favorite crime thriller series and this is book number twelve in the series.

A body is found in the forest Black Rock Falls and there similarities to a previous case that are eerily familiar to Sheriff Alton. That monster is behind bars with no contact with the outside world so it has to be a copycat killer. How does the killer know details that were never released to the public? The only way to find out is for Jenna to face the psychopath she put behind bars years ago. One thing is for sure, they need to find the killer before he kills again.

I think this might be my favorite book in the series. You can read it as a standalone, but I recommend reading them all. Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture for the ARC.

Detectives Kane and Alton are on the case again in book #13 of the series. This time they are snowed in at a mountain resort with a bunch of crime novelists and fans. When one of the guests is found murdered, Jenna, Dave, and the rest of the team have to keep the stranded visitors safe while also finding the person responsible. It seems like someone is taking their love of crime fiction too far.

This series never disappoints and book 13 was no exception. It kept me turning the page long after I should have been asleep. I can't wait to see what happens next with Kane and Alton.

Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for the ARC.

New deputy sheriff David Kane's arrival in Black Rock Falls coincides with an accident involving the sheriff Jenna Alton. Their problems gets worse with missing people and more incidents involving Jenna.
Although I did work out quite early on who were the guilty party I still enjoyed this well-written, fast paced, mystery and look forward to reading more about these characters.

Black Rock Falls over the last few years have acquired a new sheriff and several deputies and now once again they are needed. As it would seem that there is a serial killer in the town, and Sheriff Jenna Alton and the rest of the department need to find out who and how he is luring the young girls.
Always enjoy a serial killer story especially when I don't work out the killer, which is why this gets 4 stars. Though the dialogue didn't always seem to ring true, but it was still an enjoyable read.

The body of Amos Price lies in a empty house but is discovered by the realtor. With no clues and no motive Detective Jenna Alton and her team have to delve more deeply. Then another murdered body is found. Soon it becomes clear that the team have a vigilante killer to find.
Though easily read as a stand-alone I would recommend starting at Book 1.
I found this an interesting well-written story, keeping my attention right to the end. Do I want them to catch the killer, no.

The hiking season in Black Rock Falls has arrived but when a hiker discovers a skull on one of the old trails sheriff Alton and her team start to investigate. Then a body is found.
Thoroughly enjoyable story and mystery, another good addition to this series. The characters simply just grow on you and helped to keep my interest right to the end.
The book can certainly be read as a standalone story but I would recommend starting from the beginning as they are all enjoyable books.

Winter has come to Black Rock Falls, Montana, but the area may have another serial killer in its midst as Sky Paul disappears while her friend Ella Tate manages to escape. A coincidence or a connection to people who post personal items on social media.
It's for Sheriff Alton and her team to decide and investigate, meanwhile it is possible her cover has been compromised.
Another enjoyable thriller in this series with a good plotline and sub-plot where we learn more about the past of some of these characters.

Chrissie Lowe has just suffered the nightmare from hell at a college party held by the college's football team. Now her body has been found by her room-mate. Detective Alton and her team investigate. But is it a suicide or murder, the verdict is still out. M.E. Shane Wolfe is still considering the evidence. But then the body of another of the partygoer is found, another accident? Will this be the end.
Easily read as a standalone story though I would recommend the previous six books
Another excellent well-written story is this series, if a somewhat disturbing read. Though it kept me enthralled to the conclusion.

Although its the middle of the night, Detective Jenna Alton receives an emergency call from Deputy Jake Rowley. An intruder has shot a Lucas Robinson in his bed, according to a phone call from the wife Carol.
But this is only the start of a killing spree, that will continue all week. What type of serial killer is this. Alton and Kane find that at least they do have some suspects.
Another enjoyable and well-written crime story with its cast of well-drawn characters. Though in this case suspicions were rised early concerning who was the guilty party.

In "Her Shallow Grave", the story of Detective Jenna Alton and her lead detective Kane continues in book number 8 of this series. With plenty of gory details about the killer they refer to as "The Sculptor", this book is guaranteed to appease the reader who loves a good thriller. Dark haired, homeless women with tattoos start showing up dead displayed as works of art, and the writer gets very creative with what happens to the victims. The reader cringes as another woman willingly climbs into the killer's truck.

What I didn't like...I could have done without Kane's crazy stalker, which seems pretty irrelevant to the story. I also lost count of how many chapters basically ended with "Oh no! Black River Falls has another killer, psycho, madman, etc. on their hands, what will we ever do"? You can imagine the look of sheer horror on their faces while the doomsday music plays in the background. Nothing like stating the obvious, right?
It was okay for a first read from this author and I will admit, I didn't figure out which suspect responsible until the very end. I like to be surprised. Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for another book.
