The author was a homeopathist (1825-1893) of the Swedenborgian persuasion.

The story he tells, he describes as a "modern romance founded upon ancient facts. The original might be called a prose poem." [16] By a "supernatural accident", the author was "led into states of thought two thousand years in advance of his contemporaries".

He writes to appease the soul hungering for the unknown, and perhaps, unknowable -- life after life/death. As "Lazarus of Bethany, whom Christ raised from the dead".
