I'm fairly certain that Daniel J. Hogan has hit on every overdone fantasy trope, children's trope, and bad pun that has ever existed, made fun of it, and then made it integral to his epic story. This book needs every one of its 500 pages to both tell the story of a kid learning how to be a kid and to mock every silly thing that we take for granted in high fantasy.
