This is an explicit, adult book. The writer seemed more interested in belonging to a genre than in tell a compelling story. The book starts strong, even evoking Fitzgerald’s Tender is the Night (though in truth its word density is nowhere near F. Scott) but quickly fizzles into a contrived run-of-the-mill romance novel. By chapter 5 it’s too generic. The intimate scenes don’t help, they drag an already drawn-out story. It’s a shame because romance novels offer opportunities to withhold a story as much as to tell it. Many readers will find the story wearisome past the midpoint, another shame because the storytelling is strong again by chapter 20.
