Basics: 1972, hardcover, 287 pages, 16 color plates with 158 species, 400 species described, no range maps

This was the first field guide – although incomplete – to cover these islands off Venezuela. Although nearly all the birds known as of 1961 (when first printed) are described, only 158 (one-third) are shown in color. Another 34 are shown in black-and-white plates. Unfortunately, the color plates do not depict the entire bird. Instead, only the upper half of the bird, from the breast and up, is shown. Most species have only one illustration. As for the artistry, it is of moderate quality that does not approach the quality of the books by ffrench or Restall.

Each bird receives half a page of the typical field guide coverage, such as description, habitat, voice, range, and field identification. A brief account is also given for nesting. The descriptions are pretty thorough and detailed, which is necessary since 2/3 of the birds are not illustrated.

Should you use this book in Trinidad and Tobago? No. The illustrations are weak and the majority of the birds are not shown. A superior guide by Restall is now available and would work better than anything else available today.
