In all my reading of fliers from WW II who were shot down and captured by the Germans, none had spent any time in a concentration camp. Harvie spent time in Buchenwald because according to records he found after the War, the Gestapo considered him a spy because he had been wearing civilian clothing when captured. This despite the Geneva Convention stipulation that it was OK for combatants who were evading capture to wear civilian attire.
When Harvie decided to write this book, he did a great deal of research to confirm his memory of events that he had experienced and those that were taking place in the European Theatre at the same time. He also contacted as many of his fellow POW's as he could track down to clarify his recollections of his experiences and theirs as well.
After he was recognized as a POW and moved from Buchenwald to Stalag III, he met men who had participated in the Great Escape so some of their story makes these pages.
This is a very readable volume which tells a story that is not too well known.
