2729 Gilbert N. Haugen: Norwegian-American Farm Politician, by Peter T. Harstad - Bonnie Lindermann (read 9 Apr 1995) Haugen was an Iowa Congressman, whose name has been immortalized by the never enacted McNary-Haugen bill, twice vetoed by Coolidge. Haugen was born 21 Apr 1859 near Orfordville, Wis. to parents who came from Norway in 1846. He was elected to Congress from a northeast Iowa district in 1898 and re-elected 14 times, before losing in 1932 . He died 18 July 1933 at Northwood, Iowa. This is a good workmanlike biography and it was enjoyable reading. It is educative on the McNary-Haugen bill, and I thought told Haugen's story well. On March 23, 1932 Haugen broke the record for longest continuous service in the House which till then had been held by Henry H. Bingham of Pa., who died Mar 22, 1912. Since then many have beaten Haugen's record--but in olden times people did not live so long.… (más)
